In addition to serving as Interim CEO since June 2011, Michael has served as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary since 2003. During his 15 years at Collective Brands, he has held both corporate and operating roles. He has directed all aspects of the company’s successful international expansion and entry into franchising. As a seasoned business executive and legal professional, he leads international and overall business development, oversees the legal and government affairs activities of the Company.
Michael was promoted to Vice President of Contract Manufacturing and International Development in 2000, and from 2001 to 2008 he was responsible for the Company’s international operations. He served as Vice President and Group Counsel for Intellectual Property from 1998 to 2001 and as Senior Counsel from 1996 to 1998.
Prior to joining the Company, Michael served as counsel for The May Department Stores Company from 1990 until 1996, when Payless ShoeSource, the predecessor company of Collective Brands, was spun off from the May Company.
Michael, 47, holds a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and a juris doctorate from Washington University School of Law. He was admitted to the Missouri bar in 1989 and the Kansas bar in 1996. He serves as an ex-officio member of the executive committee of the board of directors of the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America.
